Feminazi, I loathe this term. It is basically a portmanteau of the nouns Feminism and Nazi. It is not very difficult to understand this concept, we have heard it, we have read it and we have said it. Anyone who is pro-life, pro gender equality, pro pay parity and anti-patriarchy is stamped on the forehead by the label ‘Feminazi’. You are a woke feminist? Nope in misogynistic lingo you are Feminazi. You have perpetrated a mass genocide by supporting abortion and you are a militant amongst feminists just like the ISIS is amongst the Muslims (hello gal-qaeda).
Feminazi is a term generally used for the ‘radical’ feminists. And according to The Oxford Dictionary of American Political Slang Feminazi refers to a committed feminist or a strong willed woman. But how did this odious, pejorative and revolting term come to exist?
Rush Limbaugh, a politically conservative radio host, popularized the term. In his book, The way things ought to be, Feminazi refers to “radical feminists” whose goal is “to see that there are as many abortions as possible”. So you see how feminism is connected to the Nazi regime? Just like the Nazi regime was extremist and perpetrated homicides on a segregated group, we ‘Feminazis’ do the same. Rush Limbaugh, that vile pig, equated the fight for gender equality to mass murder.
What is to be questioned here is the dude’s history as well. The Nazi regime actually happened to be anti-feminist in nature. It propagated birth clinics so that there could be more ‘blue blooded Aryans’ and decreed abortion as the most horrendous crime ever. So how Feminism was conjoined with Nazi, two opposing terms, is beyond anyone’s sane knowledge. It also shows how deeply ignorant Rush Limbaugh is.
But the term is now basically used for just about any feminist who raises their voice to bring forth the issues and problems plaguing the female gender. And I have a recent example to support that.
The statements were made by Mira Rajput, a well-educated woman who studied from one of the most prestigious institutes in the country, Lady Shri Ram. She is also a mother and wife of the actor Shahid Kapoor.
“The new wave of feminism is aggressive and destructive. There is a term called ‘feminazi’ which is now becoming the female equivalent of a male chauvinist.”
It is sad enough that it is coming from a woman what is even sadder is that this fight for equality, so that we can stand shoulder to shoulder with our male counterparts, is considered to be ‘destructive’. And Feminazi or ‘radical feminism’ is not the equivalent to male chauvinism. You are saying that our fight against wage disparity, crimes against women, male superiority, oppression, casual sexism and silencing of women is chauvinism! Hell no lady!
“I love being at home and love my child. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I wouldn’t want to spend one hour with Misha and then rush off to work. Why did I have her? Misha is not a puppy. I want to be there for her. Seeing her grow can’t be quantified.”
You love being at home? Great, your choice, you are getting to do what you want to do. You don’t want to work? Again, amazing, you have the choice and the luxury to stay at home and enjoy those precious moments to see your daughter grow! But that does not mean that working women treat their children as puppies. There are a couple of reasons why women work: to be financially independent, to provide for their family, to showcase their talent, knowledge and passion, etc.
The fact that you have disregarded the working women shows what your stance is Mira Rajput.
You are a housewife and you are enjoying being one. There are so many housewives who don’t get credit for what they do. They are treated as housekeepers and servants who are meant to work every day whether a holiday or not. Today if the small amount of respect that the housewives have started to get and how you are able to enjoy being one is because of this ‘new wave of feminism that is aggressive and destructive’. We ‘Feminazis’ are getting out in front of the world and screaming till our voices get hoarse just so that we can change the current status quo regarding the female gender.
And you call us a ‘Feminazi’. You are ignorant and disrespectful.
But I am grateful that you, a housewife and a woman, got a platform to voice your opinion because that wouldn’t have been possible five years ago.
The simple purpose of the term is to put us feminist onto a defensive stance; it wants to make us question our own fundamentals while the misogynists continue doing whatever obscenity they have been doing since past so many centuries. The way to put a stop to it is to respond and simply question the foolhardy of these people.
Charlotte Proudman provided an amazing solution in an article on guardian.com
“We must recognize that the label is a strategy to put feminists on the defensive by making them feel morally obligated to distinguish feminism from Nazism. And yet the public promulgation of terms such as feminazi emphasizes the need for a movement that seeks the advancement of women. Appropriating such a deplorable term definitely is not an option. Women can instead reinforce the potency of feminism by identifying as feminists. But the most important response to obscenity is to expose the misogyny being used against women.”
This is a tough time and a time for change. And change always meets with resistance and we should not fear that. We must continue on this glorious path of establishing equality in our society and embrace each other instead of pushing away. Feminazi is a disgusting term and anyone using it is simply telling that they are not a feminist and do not support equality. Feminism is equality and not one gender versus another.
You are a feminist and not a Feminazi; you are revolutionary, profound and awesome.
P.S: We are doing a book review next week on Roxane Gay’s Bad Feminist: Essays
Hopefully you would have read the book by the time and maybe we could have a discussion on it together!
